Medway Hospital LOF Shop

Project: Medway Hospital League of Friends Shop, Kent
The League of Friends Coffee Shop at Medway Maritime Hospital was the subject of a comprehensive refurbishment and fit-out delivered by Astral Ltd as principal contractor, transforming a redundant space within the hospital's main reception atrium into a welcoming, modern coffee shop and retail unit.
Designed by Turner Jackson+Day Associates with a distinctive hospitality-style interior, the project was delivered whilst maintaining the hospital's main entrance, reception, and all thoroughfares for staff and patients throughout.
The refurbishment created a series of distinct zones within the ground floor atrium, including a retail shop, coffee shop seating area, back-of-house servery, store room, and office. Interior finishes were specified to a high standard, with Farrow & Ball colour palette, black slat wall panels to feature walls and counter fronts, a bespoke barista-themed wallpaper mural above the banquette seating, and Polyflor safety flooring throughout. Bespoke joinery, black rustic timber worktops, and a carefully coordinated furniture package — including leather chairs, bar stools, and a 6.4 metre bespoke leather banquette — completed the interior.
A full mechanical and electrical installation was delivered alongside the fit-out works, including a new air source cooling system, ventilation installation, and complete electrical installation covering power, lighting, fire alarm, and emergency lighting to all zones. The project demonstrates Astral's capability in delivering high-quality, design-led fit-out within a live and operationally critical NHS environment.
