Dalby Square

Project: Dalby Square, Margate, Kent
This project formed part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) scheme, focused on conserving and repairing a historic property to restore its original character while ensuring long-term resilience. Astral Ltd were appointed to replace unsympathetic modern alterations with traditional features, reviving the building’s appearance and reinforcing its heritage value in line with the core objectives of the THI programme.
The works included the careful removal of a modern concrete tiled roof and its replacement with natural slate, alongside structural repairs to the existing roof timbers. Original detailing was reinstated through the installation of new timber sash windows and traditionally detailed timber doors, while the façade was gently cleaned and repaired using conservation-led techniques.
Externally, traditional boundary railings were reinstated and minor repairs were carried out to surrounding walls and surfaces, contributing to the overall restoration of the streetscape. As a flagship example within the THI scheme, the project also demonstrated how heritage conservation can be combined with climate-adapted, sustainable living, delivering measurable improvements in thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term affordability.
